The fall fashion runways in New York, Paris, and several other fashion capitals have all come to Iowa City, bringing skinny jeans, comfy knits and rich fabrics.

Layering key for fall

This sheer dress at Hebe can be adapted for a chilly Iowa City fall by layering.

"This season, it's all about the volume of the top and slimness of the pant," said Nicole Gibrick, an associate at Hebe, 132 S. Clinton St.

Gibrick said the fall trend of layering is quite conducive to Hebe's West Coast emphasis.

"They're all still wearing this in LA!" she said, holding out a tank top. "[The layering trend] is helpful here because we can sell a summer dress with a turtleneck under. You can bring summer stuff into fall."

"Oversized long sweaters with a big neckline, velvet, wool-cashmere blends," listed Desi Sexton, manager of Dulcinea, 2 S. Dubuque St. "The trend is more classic than normal, which is nice because it appeals to a wide range of ages."

Emphasis on oversize accessories

"Big handbags and wide belts are big fall trends," said Tracy Elder of Velvet Coat, stressing the importance of accessories for completing an outfit.

A bag like this, found at Velvet Coat, is a popular fall trend.
Her store carries brands such as Cole Haan, a popular shoe and handbag line.

Elder also emphasized oversize sweaters with skinny jeans or pants, a look found in many Iowa City boutiques.
