IOWA CITY
PUBLIC ART PROGRAM

Established in 1997 by the Iowa City City Council, the Public Art Program was first initiated by the Arts/Business Partnership of Iowa City Chamber of Commerce, the program's purpose is to "enhance the appearance of the city through selection and integration of art in a public environment. An advisory committee was also put in place to select artwork, ensure its maintenance, and further develop the program.

Currently focused primarily on the downtown area, the advisory committee is exploring the placement of art in different residential neighborhoods. The art chosen for both the downtown and and neighborhood areas is intended to "encompass and boost the spirit of the community."

Iowa Sculptors Showcase:

Sculptors from across the state have the opportunity for their work to be showcased on the "Iowa Artist's Showcase Pad," located in the Ped Mall.

Each year, the Public Art Advisory Committee invites area artists to submit their work, and the committee then chooses a new sculpture for the pad.

The unveiling of the chosen sculpture takes place at the opening of the Iowa Arts Festival.
