The University of Iowa has been an advocate of diversity for over 150 years. The University of Iowa Office of Equal Opportunity & Diversity states,
"The University of Iowa has been committed to maintaining a welcoming and diverse community of students, faculty, and staff, dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge in an atmosphere of fairness and mutual respect, where differences are not only welcomed, but valued."
According to student enrollment status for the fall of 2005, only 16.1% of the student body were minorities. In the fall of 2005 the student body totaled to 29,642 students. Out of those tens of thousands, that means only 4,773 students were minorities. These figures include undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.
The University of Iowa is an institution respected for it's defining history, but every year the world changes. Is the UI keeping up with the precedent its ancestors have set? Does the diversity of it's campus effect it's students? Will they be prepared for life beyond the walls of this institution?
